"Andrew Smith is one of Utah's most promising young artists. His intricate sculptures, which meld industrial motifs with organic elements, present works of fascination and fancy. His art seems to be a rediscovery of life’s simplicities. Smith’s sculpture has quickly gained national attention through various exhibits and commissioned works." ![]() Time Keepers Time Keepers incorporates the “movement” of a spring wound clock. It chimes once on the half hour and it chimes out the hour. click on image to enlarge Similar to Time Keepers are the Father Time, Wake Up!, Not Enough Time, Time Rolls, Times Up!, Grandfather Time and Along clock sculptures. ![]() Father Time Father Time incorporates the “movement” of a spring wound clock. Dennis describes his son's work as a "celebration of curiosity." ![]() Long Road (2002) click on image to enlarge ![]() For the Birds - Birdfeeder click on image to enlarge Andrew Smith approaches his work with a very wide expectation of what a certain piece may become. A lot of this is determined by what sort of shapes and objects he finds in the studio. "Most of it is trial and error, a kind of form follows function construction process. If an element is not working or just doesn't do what I had hoped, I will cut it off and try something else. I enjoy the raw creativity in this process. Art doesn't always have to be serious, political or even emotional. Sometimes it can just be fun. Some people have a hard time understanding my sculptures. "Whats does it do?", they ask. I usually answer, "It's doing it."" - explained Andrew. Here are few of his newer works, such as Bubbler, Cuckoo Hunting, Good Evening, High Dive, Jet Stream. ![]() Bubbler #1 Bubbler #1 was completed in 2006. However, elements of this piece where from one of the first “bubbler” sculptures I ever created back around 2000. That original piece was cut up and parts from it and another piece were put together to create the current Bubbler #1. It uses a simple six inch diameter acrylic tube filled with water. An aquarium air pump provides the bubbles. click on image to enlarge ![]() Jet Stream Jet Stream is a small figurative piece that includes some kinetic elements. The figure is holding a small blower fan that is blowing onto the large dish in front of him. The air pushes and blows around all the small plastic balls on the dish creating different patterns and movements. click on image to enlarge ![]() High Dive High Dive uses one inch chrome ball bearings. The bearings are lifted to the top of the piece by both a rotating magnent lift and a chain lift. The balls are collected at the top in a small tube. Once five balls fill the tube it tips, releasing them all down the ramp towards a jump. The jump launches the balls backwards through the air onto a short track. This track leads to what was once a large satellite dish. The balls enter the dish and circle for about a minute and a half until they hit the rubber bumpers towards the center and bounce around until they randomly fall through the small hole at the center and roll back to the start. click on image to enlarge click on image to enlarge Good Evening Good Evening functions as an outdoor (or indoor) lamp. The lights in the figures head and the railroad lantern light up. ![]() Cuckoo Hunting Cuckoo Hunting incorporates the workings of a cuckoo clock. The metal “house” was constructed to match the original wood frame mounting points. Then the figures were added onto the piece. It functions just as a cuckoo clock, chiming on the hour and half hour. click on image to enlarge Amazing works, aren't they?
